She is also a Specialist Education Consultant in autism spectrum conditions and associated learning differences and disabilities such as dyspraxia, dyslexia, ADHD and PDA. Dawn is able to provide tailored advice and support in educational placements to identify and deliver the implementation of strategies to help address the barriers attributed to asc and associated learning differences.

The service works to empower students by addressing their prime needs in order to help them to build their confidence and ability to learn new skills that help them to achieve their personal and educational goals, negotiate and manage everyday challenges, make informed choices and make positive changes. It is a can do approach which uses their strengths , interest and thinking style to motivate and support personal development.

This will have involved collaborative working with the person themselves, their families and a range of different professionals/agencies. The support includes:

• Identifying strengths
• Identifying support needs
• Drawing up personalised individual learning plans with achievable goals and impact measurements which aims to remove barriers to learning and progress
• Monitoring and reviewing goals with the individual
• Mentoring and guidance to improve well-being such as managing anxiety and confidence, improving peer relationships and increasing independence and autonomy
• Working closely with academic departments to ensure that individual person’s support requirements are met through reasonable adjustments and staff awareness
• Working closely with academic staff and sharing expertise, providing training and contributing to an inclusive learning and teaching environment

We can help to prepare students for work experience, such as teaching practice, by ensuring they understand what they are expected to do in respect of policies, lesson plans, lesson delivery and behaviour. This is done with the consent of, and sometimes along with, a school or university/college mentor. A student personal profile for the work place, which the students contribute to also, is provided beforehand and staff visit the work place and provide feedback to the student and the mentor.

We can also contribute to multi disciplinary meetings with students and education staff, eg: inclusion team, tutors and careers advisers, in order to ensure a shared understanding of expectations between the student and the staff and personalised strategies to break down barriers to learning and engagement.
